Tokyo is a city packed from one end to the other with buildings. People, cars, light and wind thread their way through the narrow cracks in between. It’s like navigating a labyrinth, at times triggering uncertainty at the possibility that no exit exists. This exhibition’s works utilize pole-like objects as organic symbols superimposed over the complex, inorganic, overlapping structures of the city, serving to express strength and endurance. While navigating the narrow streets and alleys between buildings, one might stop and look up, catching a neatly cropped view of the blue sky above and its clouds drifting past. I believe it is possible to free your mind from the oppression of time and space, even in the middle of such a built-up urban environment. My hope is that this exhibition will provide opportunities for you to experience the strength of each person as an individual.
