The Aesthetics of Noodles

Show Window

We wove some noodles.

Spaghetti, udon, somen,soba.

All are born from singlestrands made from grain.

Since antiquity, humans havepursued delicious foods and flavors by kneading and rolling out dough, then shapingit into thin strands. This process of making noodles—ensuring uniformthickness, smooth sheen, and pleasing bite—can be seen as a pursuit of taste andtexture, yet it can also be likened to a sculptural endeavor to create exquisitelines.

Beyond this, oneperceives a certain shared rhythm—in the arrangement of the noodles, in themovements required to make them, in the act of consuming them at the table.

With that in mind, weapproached this project as a study designed to examine noodles in greaterdepth.

Some noodles were actuallywoven and intertwined, transforming them into a structure. While doing so, differencesin firmness, chewiness, and elasticity of each noodle emerged, presenting as uniquecharacteristics.

In an age that demandsefficiency, from flour to noodles and from noodles to weaving.

Deliberately taking thetime to do things by hand, and verifying the results using your body.

The Aesthetics of Noodlesis an exploration of the human endeavors that have evolved in the pursuit offlavor through the laborious process of hand-weaving noodles.
